Abstract

The article presents the results of theoretical calculations and experimental studies of the high-voltage equipment X-ray inspection environmental aspects. Distances from the X-ray source to the boundary beyond which safe radiation area begins are calculated based on an X-ray inspection physico-mathematical model. The calculations were carried out as applied to the designs of minimum-oil and SF6 live tank circuit breakers of the 110 kV voltage class and a continuously operating X-ray unit with a 440 kV voltage on the tube. The results of laboratory studies aimed at determining the features of scattered ionizing radiation produced during X-ray inspection are given. Practical studies of the radiation environment that takes place in the open area without the monitored object during the operation of the developed mobile scanning X-ray system were carried out. Similar studies were carried out at a substation during X-ray inspection of a 110 kV minimum-oil circuit breaker. Based on the study results, the area around the X-ray system has been determined, beyond the boundaries of which the radiation environment that takes place when scanning the minimum-oil circuit breaker in the course of the X-ray system operation is safe for the operators (10–20 m) and population (around 40–50 m). Operators may also work inside the duly protected cabin of the vehicle that carries the scanning X-ray inspection system. The article is a continuation of the studies the results of which were reported in [1].
