Abstract

In this work the set of expression is derived to enable estimation the mass and dimensions of electrical machines in a wide range of powers and speeds. The input parameters are the type of machine, its power, speed, voltage, type of cooling and efficiency requirements. The key to obtaining the results was the simultaneous consideration of specific powers and torques of a wide range of machines on a logarithmic scale and analysis of the graphical information. The coefficients are proposed that are determined by the “nature” of electrical machines as the class of technical devices, and coefficients that depend on the design of a particular machine. In addition, the expression for scaling is derived enabling estimation of the mass of the new machine, based on the parameters of the known machine. The paper also carried out a critical evaluation of the Arnold’s machine constant derived in 1896, and still used, and proposes an alternative machine constant.
