On the Lightning Resistance of Space Rockets

Abstract

Recently, matters concerned with lightning protection and lightning resistance of space rockets are becoming of issue in connection with the fact that space launch facilities are constructed in areas of high lightning activity [1–3]. It is rather difficult to completely protect a rocket from the lightning impact using only the launcher lightning protection system. The rocket safety can be further enhanced only by imparting self-lightning resistance to the rocket. The article discusses matters concerned with selecting the rocket lightning protection and lightning resistance levels for enhancement of its safety. For monitoring possible lightning strike at the rocket, it is proposed to fit the rocket with equipment for measuring the lightning strike intensity at the rocket.
