155 years ago in 1870, the Belgian electrical engineer Zenobe-Théophile Gramme received a patent for a DC generator. This machine combined several of the latest achievements of the time. Soon, the Gram Company organized the mass production of DC generators and motors, which found wide application in industry. The figure shows a "hammer drill for mine galleries" with a Gramme design motor.
